Pima County Cervical Cancer Prevention Partnership

The REACH Pima County Cervical Cancer Prevention Partnership is funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health Grant and is based at The U of A Center of Excellence in Women's health. Partnership members include community residents, health care providers and centers, school districts, representatives from city and county government, neighborhood associations and other non-profit organizations. 

Vision:  To create a community where women do not die from cervical cancer and can live healthy and productive lives.

Mission:  To increase knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer screening, prevention and management and facilitate access to diagnosis and treatment services. 

The mission of UA's Center of Exellence in Women's Health is to improve helath and promote wellness of all women throughout the lifecycle. 

As a means of preventing cervical cancer in Mexican-American women in southern                    Pima County the partnership is:

  1. Disseminating a cervical cancer prevention community health worker train-the-trainer program and training community health workers.
  2. Implementing a bilingual, school-based parent-to-parent peer-education program to provide objective information on the HPV vaccine to help parents of middle-school aged girls make an informed decision.
  3. Helping women in Pima county understand how to navigate the health care system to increase screening, early detection and follow up for abnormal pap results.
  4. Providing technical assistanc to policy makers.

What people need to know about cervical cancer:

  • Usually has no symptoms in the early stages
  • Is highly preventable through regular screening and follow-up
  • A vaccine for girls and women up to 18 years old protect against the two types of Human Papiloma Virus that cuase 70% of cervical cancer cases is now available.
  • Is highly curable if detected early.
